The Three Pubs of Gamlingay

The Three Pubs of Gamlingay

A century and half ago, there were around fifty pubs in Gamlingay. The number has declined a little over the years, and we are now left with just two (and a social club). A couple of years ago, one could joke that the village was only interested in the Cock and the Hardwicke. (The Wheatsheaf, invoking ideas of fertility and fecundity, has the least suggestive name.) But, alas!, the Hardwick closed down. Luckily, it has been turned into a truly excellent Indian restaurant. The Cock and the Wheatsheaf remain as pubs.

Over time, I'll add to this page and give more information about our village pubs...

There we are. Aren't they lovely. I'm sorry that I don't have more pictures to show, but that's because I spent too much time inside the pubs. But come back soon and I'll have more to show.

LATEST: The Hardwicke has closed down, but has reopened as an Indian restaurant called Jannah (which I believe means both 'garden' and 'paradise' in Arabic). They've done a really beautiful job of the conversion, and the food is great. Click here for the menu and here for embarrassing photos from the opening night (which I couldn't make, sadly).
