Slavery Timeline

A Chronology of Slavery, Abolition, and Emancipation

These pages offer a detailed timeline of the main historical, literary, and cultural events connected with slavery, abolition, and emancipation in Great Britain and its colonies. They also include references to the most significant events taking place outside of the British zone of influence as well as details of key events in the history of European exploration and colonisation.

For the moment, this timeline is under construction. The pages for 1400-1500 and for 1501-1600 are now complete, while the others currently offer varying amounts of information. To find out how much, click on a date range in the list below to go to the chronology for the period you are interested in. I hope to complete the timeline soon.

Links in the chronology are given to pages on this website only. For my sources and for further reading, look at the page Further Reading: Slavery, Abolition, and Emancipation. Please also let me know if you notice any errors or have any suggestions for items I might add to the timeline.
